Kayak Nature Tour
March 4, 2018$20.00
March 4 & 11, 2018
15.4 miles east
Register for a three-hour Nature Tour by Kayak in search of Great Blue Herons, eagles, and hawks led by a professional guide with a state park ranger at Lake Sammamish State Park in Issaquah. Kayaks available. Bring a state park pass or pay $10 to park.
Great Blue Herons nest near the mouth of Issaquah Creek as it spills into Lake Sammamish. Lake Sammamish State Park provides a bountiful habitat for roughly 60-100 nests. Early March is the best month to see adult herons busy building out existing nests for their new offspring. Kayaks allow us to observe the nesting herons from a variety of perspectives before the spring leaves blossom and hide the nests. You will see a number of other species of waterfowl and raptors, maybe even a bald eagle! This kayak tour will be lead by Issaquah Paddle Sports/Kayak Academy kayak guides and will be presented by a State Park Interpretive Ranger on the water. A short walk, for a land based perspective is part of the tour where spotting scopes are provided for observing the heron nests. Participants are encouraged to bring their own binoculars for wildlife viewing from the water.
Lake Sammamish State Park is 512 acres with over a mile of shoreline, three creek mouths, and two beaches.
Drysuits, neoprene booties, and PFD’s (life jackets) will be provided for use free of charge to all participants courtesy of Kayak Academy. PFDs and drysuits are required to be worn for this tour (in March the lake’s water temperature is 40 degrees). Dress in long underwear tops and bottoms and socks to wear inside the drysuits (these suits keep your clothes and socks dry, but your warmth is dependent on the layers you wear under the drysuit).
This is our first event of the year and we will need your help moving boats from our sheds to the beach. Please come a little early and/or stay after to help. Thanks.
