For all my boating friends, out-of-town tourists and folks around the lake…
Just a quick note that BOTH locks will be closed for five hours tomorrow, Wednesday 6/9, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, aka the Ballard Locks, will have crews and divers inspecting the “Salmon Exclusion Structure”. The structure prevents trapping salmon in the saltwater return system used while operating the locks. This system is used to improve the salmon runs each year. The salmon use the locks’ fish ladder to return from salt water to fresh water and return to their spawning grounds.
In finding out about this I started to dig into the Locks a bit more. I think I’ll do a full blown blog on the Locks soon!
